General Manager Guldbrand Skjönberg,

International Safe Community Certifying Centre Speech at the closing ceremony , November 25, 2015.

This has been the first conference with the perspective Involvement of grassroots.

The conference has shown us how important it is to involve the grassroots.

Safe communities are models for other communities and I will take up this in four different aspects.

The first aspect is the question about grassroots involvement

Often we have so far discussed grassroots and their NGO: s as pressure groups or contributors to the community with voluntary workers when the money from the taxpayers is not enough.

Here we have learnt that it is not a question about top-down or bottom up. It is a question about cooperation and a combination of top-down and bottom-up.

The Mayor in Nan informed us about how he had built up a safe culture in Nan through

– Partnership resulting in mutual understanding

– Sharing truth and thoughts between grassroots and the leaders in the community

The result has become a safe culture.

So the question about grassroots participation has been developed from work with pressure groups or voluntary workers free from charge to how to build up a safe Culture through cooperation between grassroots and the community.

This is the first aspect. Nan is a good model for other communities when it comes to grassroots involvement

The second aspect is the decision in Nan to work for a non-alcoholic This conference has is a good example

The third aspect is that Safe Communities can learn about safety through cross-sector collaboration with the private sector.

Cross-sector work we have talked a lot about in our movement. For the first time we have had a panel with representatives from the private sector. Many thanks to Koustuv Dalal and Chadaporn Suksiriwan for their initiative to that.

It was interesting to hear how an international enterprise – DuPont – acts as a forerunner and model for others. I have seen how this enterprise in Guangzhou in China has educated and forced all their employees to use belts if they commute with car to the workplace and to use helmets if they come with motorbike or bike. DuPont also has their own label on the helmets.

When does the first International Safe Community have this routine for their employees?

This was the third aspect and an example about how private companies can contribute with good ideas to the community sector

The fourth aspect is how we as Safe Communities in the future can be better in informing other communities about good models for safety

We hope that we in our International Safe Community Certifying Centre with help from our Safe Community Support Centres can build up a database with good examples from our member communities.

I also want to mention that I have heard many participants here who have told me that they have got a lot of new knowledge about Safe Communities here at panels, lectures and during discussions.

At last I must add that I feel so satisfied when I have seen all this wonderful children who have been dancing and informing us about Nan. When I have seen and heard them I have been wondering – are some of them behind the figures in your presentation of decreased injuries and death.
